Artist Interview

Katie deGuzman of K/LLER Collection

July 9, 2013

Co-creators Michael Miller and Katie deGuzman (right)

We cannot get enough of Katie deGuzman and Michael Miller's K/LLER Collection, a delicately dangerous, intricately designed armory of handcast accessories. Every piece is a work of art, but layering is highly encouraged: basically, the more the better. Brooklyn-based deGuzman and Miller joined creative forces just under three years ago, and they're taking the world by forged metal. With their refined-edge aesthetic and growing notoriety in Hollywood and the music industry, one might be intimidated by these two designers. But Katie and Michael couldn't be sweeter. Katie deGuzman will be here at Ode with the K/LLER bounty on Friday, July 12th, 6-8pm. You'll want to see this.

How did you get started?
My partner Michael Miller and I met at Parsons School of Design and studied furniture design. I knew I wanted to design jewelry early on in school, but Parsons didn’t have a Jewelry design major so I spent a semester abroad at Glasgow School of art studying Jewelry and Silversmithing, but I really learned most of what I know about jewelry from my 10 years working in the industry. My first job out of college was as a part time assistant to a jeweler in the Lower East Side in NYC (mostly soldering jumprings and trying not to mangle his jewelry), followed by a fulltime bench assistant for a jewelry designer doing primary 18k jewelry work. From there I designed for many other costume jewelry companies including Alexis Bittar and Subversive Jewelry. Two and half years ago Michael and I reconvened and started our brand K/LLER COLLECTION.

What do you love about your job?
Having my own company with Michael is the best feeling, I love working for myself, and designing jewelry of course!  It’s also so rad and inspirational to see woman and men on the street and people I admire wearing our jewelry and loving it..that is really what I love most.

Where do you find inspiration?
Everywhere. From shapes in nature, to rusted tools, skeletons, and dirty sidewalks. The list is endless.

What is your dream project?
A shoe collaboration.

What are your plans for the future?
Continuing to grow the company. We’d also like to launch a fine jewelry line.  Stay tuned…

If I wasn’t doing this, I would be...
Doing something creative or a dermatologist.

What's your favorite line from a movie, song, or book?
“A certain darkness is needed to see the stars.” Osho

If you were a piece of clothing, what would be and what color/pattern?
A pair of Rick Owens black leather boots.

What is your favorite word, and why?
Acetylene. I like how it rolls off the tongue and that it can create fire.

What's your go-to "happy" song?
Right now it’s “Thrift Shop” by Macklemore….and then I bought a knee board….

What’s the best advice you’ve ever gotten?
“Always give a firm handshake and look them in the eye.” My dad.

When was the last time you laughed so hard you cried?
Last weekend when my siblings, parents, husband and son played “lawn games” together complete with a lucky charms eat off (your partner was the one blindly feeding you) and a dizzy bat race. My family is hysterical.

Join us Friday, July12th from 6-8pm to meet Katie and shop their latest collection.
