September 2014 Philanthropy
Homework House is an incredible organization that provides free after-school tutoring and mentoring for children in Holyoke, Massachusetts who are at-risk for academic failure and dropping out of school. By giving children a loving and caring environment with a ratio of one tutor for every two students, Homework House helps them improve their literacy skills, rekindle their interests in learning and become productive members of the community. Here is a little more from Homework House:
What Is Homework House?
Homework House is a safe and nurturing place where children learn that they can succeed in school. Since 2006, Homework House has provided FREE tutoring and mentoring to hundreds of Holyoke children who are most at risk of educational failure. At Homework House, we believe that every child is capable of EXCELLENCE according to his or her strengths and needs. Homework House is a DIVERSE COMMUNITY of adults and children who work together to help each child realize the fullness of his or her potential. Homework House is Jose, one of our very first kids who is now a scholarship student at Northfield Mt. Herman, and Danny, a fifth grader who has come to love Jules Verne. We are Joretta, a student at Mt. Holyoke and Sr. Mary, a retired teacher, who are both volunteer tutors. We are families concerned about their children’s future. Homework House fosters a culture of SUCCESS building on each child’s inherent strengths and resilience.
What Do We Do?
During the school year, over 90 children from Holyoke’s poorest neighborhoods come to one of Homework House’s two sites. Each day, the children work with their tutors to complete their homework, and improve their reading and math skills. We keep our tutor to student ratio low: one tutor usually works with two children. We work closely with the schools our children attend so that the work that we do with them at Homework House supports and builds on what they are learning in the classroom.
How Can You Help?
Do you have time or a special talent to share? Can you spare two hours each week to help an at-risk child with his or her homework? We always need VOLUNTEER tutors. Because we want to keep our program accessible to those children most in need, Homework House is FREE for all students. We depend on the financial support of caring individuals to carry out our work. Donations are always welcome.
